In a landmark show of inter-state collaboration, the governments of Ebonyi and Benue states have launched a transformative infrastructure project—a five-span bridge and access roads linking Enyim in Ebonyi's Izzi LGA to Igede Benue's Oju LGA.
Speaking at the official flag-off, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State revealed that the initiative, executed in two phases, reflects shared development goals with Benue, as Governor Hyacinth Alia has committed to completing the road segment on Benue’s side once the bridge is ready.
“The Governor of Benue has given his firm commitment to this initiative, and I must commend him for his genuine dedication to our shared development goals,” Nwifuru said, highlighting the unity and foresight driving the project.
With technical oversight and support from the Nigerian Army, the project is not just an engineering feat but a symbol of sacrifice and national cohesion. The military’s additional construction efforts—offered at no extra cost—underscore their deep-rooted commitment to peace, security, and development in the region.
Governor Nwifuru shared a personal connection to the site, recalling a 1996 childhood accident that brought him to the Sudan United Mission Hospital.
“I saw people using canoes to cross into Benue and I wondered when development would come here. I never imagined I would be the one to make that change happen. I am grateful to God for this opportunity.”
Representing Governor Alia at the ceremony, Mr. Isaac Ukpa reaffirmed Benue’s full support, stating the project would unlock trade and economic opportunities for both states.
Brigadier-General Saidu Bello, the project coordinator, confirmed the project’s approval and reasonable cost, while Chief Tony Nwizi, Director General of Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation, emphasized its significance as a gateway to the FCT and beyond.
This historic bridge is more than concrete and steel—it is a promise of connection, commerce, and community for generations to come.
