The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has successfully concluded its primary elections, producing 55 chairmanship candidates for the forthcoming July 12 local government polls. The primaries, which were held under tight security, featured both keenly contested ballots and consensus arrangements across the state’s 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
Among the prominent figures who secured tickets were Usman Hamzat, brother of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and Moyosore Ogunlewe, son of former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe. The duo emerged alongside 53 other aspirants—comprising both incumbents and newcomers.
The exercise, which took place at the APC Secretariat on Acme Road, Ikeja, was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere with significant delegate participation. Voting began around 12:10 p.m. following an accreditation process that started at 10 a.m. Security was provided by personnel deployed under the directive of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, while officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) monitored proceedings.
Prior to the commencement of voting, Deputy Governor Hamzat addressed the delegates, urging unity and calm to ensure a smooth electoral process. APC Electoral Committee Chairman, Babatunde Ogala, later announced four consensus chairmanship candidates from Iba, Oto Awori, Ijede, and Lekki LCDAs: Isa Abiola Jubril, Azeez Kareem, Tunrayo Gbadebo, and Rasak Kasali, respectively.
Out of 470 aspirants who submitted nomination forms, 432 were cleared to contest by the party’s screening committee. However, delegates from Lagos Mainland LG and Yaba LCDA boycotted the primaries due to unresolved internal crises. In Yaba, the protest followed allegations of imposition surrounding the nomination of Joseph Ojo, rejected by a group of youths under the “Concerned Youth of Yaba.”
After approximately five hours of voting and vote collation, results were announced by Ogala at around 5:15 p.m.
