The South-East zonal executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has re-nominated Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the party’s national secretary.
The decision was presented to the party’s acting National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja by Senate Minority Leader Osita Ngwu. According to Mr Ngwu, the re-nomination follows a series of efforts by party stakeholders, including the PDP Governors’ Forum, to resolve the leadership dispute surrounding the position.
Mr Ngwu noted that the forum met on April 14 in Oyo State, and subsequently resolved that the South-East zonal executive should nominate a candidate. The committee met on May 14 at the Enugu Government House and unanimously selected Mr Udeh-Okoye.
“We are praying that the request of this zone should not be jeopardised. Let it be a stepping stone in our urge and our drive to reposition our party,” Mr Ngwu said.
Receiving the resolution, PDP acting national chairman Umar Damagum expressed optimism about restoring the party’s strength in the South-East. He assured the caucus that the leadership would consider their request and present a recommendation at the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27.
“I understand why you are not happy, but even as you are angry out there, we can find a solution,” Mr Damagum said, urging aggrieved members to remain with the party and work towards unity.
“PDP is the only party where you can feel peaceful; you can express your opinion,” he added.
Mr Damagum affirmed the party's capacity to overcome its internal challenges and emerge stronger.
