Former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), has formally declared his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Al-Mustapha made his intention known on Tuesday during a consultative meeting with party leaders and stakeholders in Minna, Niger State. His declaration marks a significant political move, reigniting debate around leadership, legacy, and national stability.
Speaking to party faithful, the retired military officer said his decision was borne out of deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and political disarray. He pledged to run a campaign focused on national unity, ethical leadership, and grassroots development.
“Our nation is in dire need of rescue. I am offering myself to serve with integrity and to rebuild the trust between the government and the governed,” Al-Mustapha stated.
The SDP leadership welcomed his declaration, describing it as a timely development that could reposition the party as a credible alternative in 2027. Party officials in attendance hailed Al-Mustapha’s entry as a “boost to the SDP’s national relevance and electoral viability.”
As part of his engagement in Niger State, Al-Mustapha visited communities affected by recent flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area, where he donated relief materials and assured victims of a people-focused leadership model.
Observers say his entry into the race adds a new dimension to the emerging political landscape, with the SDP potentially benefiting from his military background and national security experience.
