The Ebonyi State Government has disclosed that it is close to completing several major water schemes across the state to boost access to potable water, especially in the capital, Abakaliki, and its environs.
The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Chinedu Nkah, made the announcement during a media briefing in Abakaliki, emphasizing that the Abakaliki and Oferekpe Water Schemes are top priorities due to their potential to serve large segments of the state.
"You will agree with me that before the end of this year, we are going to have enough water for the capital city and the environment," Nkah said.
He highlighted that while the Oferekpe and Ezillo Water Schemes are operational, the key challenge remains the reticulation and extension of pipelines to streets and new layouts that currently lack access.
On the Ukawu Water Scheme, the commissioner described it as a project of critical importance to the Ebonyi South zone. "The Ukawu Water Scheme is as large as Oferekpe and has the capacity to serve the entire southern region. However, we are currently focused on completing Abakaliki and Oferekpe to ensure efficient delivery before expanding," he explained.
Nkah noted that work was temporarily delayed on a section near Speedway Filling Station where a pipe was damaged, but repairs are underway to restore full service from Oferekpe to the central reservoir.
Regarding the Ishiagu Water Scheme, Nkah confirmed that civil works have been completed, and preparations are ongoing to begin electromechanical installations and piping. “We have articulated all that is required and will approach the governor this week to begin the next phase,” he stated.
The commissioner reassured residents of Ebonyi that efforts are being intensified to ensure that pipe-borne water becomes accessible to all. “The hope is very high as far as water supply is concerned,” he concluded.
