The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former caretaker chairman of the party, Professor Augustine Alugbala Nwazunku.
Prof. Nwazunku, a prominent academic and politician, was confirmed dead on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Until his passing, he was a Consultant and Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
In a condolence message issued by the PDP’s 2023 Deputy Governorship candidate, Senator Paulinus Igwenwagu, Odii described the late professor as a dependable leader, whose commitment to the party and service to humanity left a lasting impact.
“On behalf of our leader, H.E. Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, and the entire Ebonyi PDP, we hereby inform you that we have again lost one of us — a leader and dependable member and former Caretaker Chairman of our party in Ebonyi State — Professor Augustine Nwazunku,” the statement read.
The party has suspended all activities scheduled for Saturday, June 28, in honour of the late chieftain. Members have also been directed to assemble at Aristocrat Hotel along Ezza Road for a condolence visit to the bereaved family.
The cause of his death remains unknown as of press time. Prof. Nwazunku was highly regarded for his contributions to politics, public health, and academia. His death is seen as a significant loss to both the PDP and the intellectual community.
