The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi has submitted a formal proposal to the emerging opposition coalition, declaring his intention to serve only one term of four years if elected president in 2027.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, disclosed this on Tuesday during a chieftaincy conferment ceremony held in Pantami, Gombe State, where Obi was honoured with the traditional title of Sarki Maskan (War Hero) for his contributions to the community.
Tanko confirmed that Obi’s single-tenure proposal has been submitted to the coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark.
“We have presented it to the coalition for consideration. Obi is committed to a single term, which he believes is sufficient to reposition the country. This shows his readiness, discipline, and integrity,” Tanko stated.
According to him, the proposal, though not constitutionally required, reflects Obi’s confidence in delivering tangible national reforms within four years. He cited economic recovery, electricity stabilization, and boosting Nigeria’s export capacity as core targets under Obi’s leadership.
Tanko also said Obi's growing acceptance in the North influenced his decision to accept the honorary title after years of declining similar offers elsewhere.
“This is not just a title. It is a statement from the North recognizing an Igbo man for his service. Obi has built boreholes, supported Almajiri schools, funded youth projects, and brought clean water to communities like Pantami,” he said.
He added that the local people now refer to the water project as “Peter Obi’s borehole,” describing it as a symbol of national unity and rising popularity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tanko concluded that Obi’s bridge-building efforts across Nigeria show he is gaining ground beyond his traditional support base, especially in regions where he previously had limited political reach.
