Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared unwavering support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, stating that opposition leaders will unite behind whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate.
Amaechi, speaking in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said the coalition of opposition figures had resolved to back a single candidate through a credible primary. “Once anyone emerges, we’ll all support them. That’s the agreement,” he told journalists.
He criticized the Tinubu-led APC government for the economic hardship plaguing Nigerians and urged Rivers State residents to dump the APC and register with the ADC.
The ADC has become the platform for a new opposition alliance featuring political heavyweights such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra governor Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The coalition, unveiled on July 2 with David Mark as interim chairman, aims to prevent Nigeria from slipping into a one-party state and to present a united challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However, the movement faces internal resistance. Some ADC youths have rejected the inclusion of veteran politicians, accusing them of recycling failed leadership. Reno Omokri has also cast doubt on the process, claiming the ticket may already be pre-determined.
Despite the controversy, Amaechi’s endorsement adds momentum to the opposition’s push to reclaim power, setting the tone for a high-stakes 2027 election showdown.
