The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially extended the tenure of its Ward, Local Government, and State Executive Committees across Nigeria until December 31, 2025.
This key resolution was taken at the party’s 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja. The high-powered meeting was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC governors, national officers, and lawmakers in attendance.
The extension, according to party insiders, aims to ensure stability at the grassroots level and allow the party sufficient time to restructure and reconcile internal factions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A party official who attended the meeting but spoke on condition of anonymity said:
“The party is taking a strategic pause to consolidate its internal structures. Extending the tenure of existing executives across the board helps avoid disruption and provides room for comprehensive preparation ahead of 2027.”
The NEC meeting also witnessed the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as the National Chairman of the APC, citing health-related reasons. He was immediately replaced by Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, a former governorship candidate in Plateau State and a renowned technocrat.
While much attention was focused on the leadership change, party leaders stressed that the extension of the tenures at the grassroots was equally significant for APC’s forward planning. This move effectively postpones any major shake-up or reconstitution of local party structures for the next five months.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions within party circles. Some stakeholders welcomed the move as a “masterstroke of continuity,” while others cautioned that failure to hold congresses as scheduled could trigger fresh grievances in already polarized state chapters.
Political observers believe the NEC decisions reflect President Tinubu’s effort to retain firm control over party machinery, consolidate unity, and eliminate distractions as preparations for his potential re-election bid in 2027 gather momentum.
As it stands, all eyes are now on the new National Chairman and the extended grassroots executives to maintain discipline, deepen reconciliation, and rally support for the APC across the federation.
