Former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently undergoing medical treatment in London after falling ill during a routine check-up, his spokesperson Garba Shehu has confirmed.
“It is true that the former president is unwell. He became ill while in the UK for his annual check-up and is currently receiving treatment. Thankfully, he is recovering,” Shehu said.
Buhari, 82, left office in May 2023 and retired to Daura, Katsina State. He has been abroad since April 2025. The exact nature of his illness and the hospital treating him remain undisclosed.
His prolonged stay abroad has revived public attention on his history of frequent medical trips to the UK while in office, including a 104-day absence in 2017.
As of press time, the federal government has not issued an official statement regarding his condition.
