A member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. (Dr.) Victor Chidi Nwoke, has strongly condemned the recent killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing it as a “barbaric massacre” and a direct affront to human dignity and peaceful coexistence.
The victims, who were reportedly unarmed and peacefully assembled at the time of the attack, were said to be from various communities in Ebonyi State, including at least one person of Ezza extraction.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Hon. Nwoke, who represents Abakaliki North Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Youth Development and Sports, expressed deep grief and outrage over the incident, calling for urgent and decisive action by security agencies and the Anambra State Government.
“The brutal killing of these defenceless citizens is a vile desecration of human dignity and a savage affront to the sanctity of life. It is an abomination that shakes the foundations of our collective humanity,” the lawmaker said.
He emphasized that the attack was not only a tragedy for the victims’ families and the people of Ebonyi State, but also a stain on national unity, calling it “a flagrant assault on the ideals of peace, unity, and mutual coexistence that our nation strives to uphold.”
Nwoke urged all relevant authorities—including federal and state security agencies—to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay.
“This heinous act demands justice. I call upon the security agencies and the Anambra State Government to deploy every available resource to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved families, the lawmaker assured them of his unwavering solidarity, noting that the memories of the deceased would not be forgotten and that their deaths must not be in vain.
“Their pain is our pain, and their loss is a national tragedy. Let this tragic event be a clarion call for the restoration of peace, order, and human decency in our land,” Nwoke added.
The incident has sparked growing concerns across the Southeast, with stakeholders urging both state and federal governments to prioritize security in rural communities and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
As tensions simmer, the Ebonyi lawmaker called for unity and calm among citizens, warning that continued silence in the face of such atrocities would encourage impunity and deepen national division.
“We must rise in unity to resist the descent into lawlessness and savagery. The time to act decisively is now,” he said.
He concluded by invoking a call for justice, quoting scripture: “May justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
