The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the gruesome killing of two Nigerian traders in South Africa, describing the act as “senseless and barbaric.” The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) made this known in a statement on Wednesday, following the murder of two citizens identified only as Austin and Ayo in Durban.
NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is actively engaging with authorities in Pretoria, insisting that the perpetrators must be swiftly identified and brought to justice. She expressed deep concern that the early warning system agreed upon by both countries to prevent xenophobic violence is yet to be operationalised.
“The Nigerian government strongly condemns this latest unprovoked attack. This is not just senseless, it is intolerable,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “We urge South African authorities to investigate and expose the criminals behind this tragedy.”
According to reports, masked gunmen stormed Austin’s office and opened fire, killing him and his friend, Ayo, who was visiting at the time. Both died instantly from close-range gunshots.
In response to growing tension among Nigerians in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa appealed for calm, warning against retaliation and calling for trust in the ongoing investigation. She said the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner has demanded a transparent and thorough inquiry into the killings.
The Commission extended condolences to the bereaved families and vowed to ensure justice is pursued through diplomatic and legal channels.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and working in South Africa, reigniting calls for stronger bilateral protections and diaspora security frameworks.
