The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the Federal Polytechnic of Vocational and ICT, Onueke, in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The bill, sponsored by the Senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District and Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, Sen. Engr. Kenneth Emeka Eze, was passed during plenary following overwhelming support from fellow lawmakers and civil society groups.
Reacting to the development, Senator Eze described the passage of the bill as a legislative milestone and a dream come true for the people of Ebonyi Central and the entire state.
He noted that the proposed institution is aimed at boosting human capital development in the region by equipping youths with technical and vocational skills relevant to today’s technology-driven job market.
“This institution will help our young people develop marketable skills, become self-employed, and ultimately transform into employers of labour,” Eze stated.
The senator also urged youths in his constituency to take advantage of the opportunities the polytechnic would offer once operational.
He expressed gratitude to his colleagues in the 10th Senate for their support and commended residents of Ebonyi Central who participated in the public hearing process to show solidarity.
The bill is expected to proceed to the House of Representatives for concurrence before receiving presidential assent.
