The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has revealed that discreet negotiations are ongoing between President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, and prominent Igbo leaders aimed at securing the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This revelation was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze, and Chief Thompson Ohia, the group’s national spokesman.
According to the statement, the talks are yielding “viable pathways” that could lead to Kanu’s release, pending the outcome of the Federal High Court’s final judgment in Abuja.
“These pivotal discussions have opened essential channels for a peaceful resolution. We are optimistic that this effort will culminate in the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the statement noted.
Ohanaeze disclosed that Senator Dave Umahi is championing the initiative with the full support of the organisation and Igbo elders across political and traditional lines.
Although representatives of Kanu are yet to be officially involved, Ohanaeze assured that they will be brought into the process at the appropriate time to ensure unity and transparency among all stakeholders.
The group urged IPOB supporters and other pro-Biafra agitators to remain calm and suspend any planned protests or inflammatory statements that may disrupt the delicate process.
“We reassure our people that no political conditions will be attached to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release. President Tinubu will not demand any compromises that threaten the dignity or rights of the Igbo nation,” the group emphasized.
This development marks a significant diplomatic move that could reshape the political landscape in the South-East and foster national reconciliation, especially amid growing calls for justice and equity.
