The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi has paid glowing tribute to the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader of rare discipline, integrity, and patriotic dedication.
Speaking on Wednesday at the signing of the condolence register at the Federal Ministry of Works Headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja, Senator Umahi reminisced on his personal relationship with the late President, recounting humorous, heartfelt, and politically defining moments they shared.
He praised Buhari's unwavering support to Ebonyi State, especially during his tenure as Governor, revealing that the late President played a pivotal role in ensuring the emergence of the current Governor against stiff political opposition.
“He was a man of great honour. I remember his call after I sent him Abakaliki rice recently. He told me,
'‘I’m not missing Abakaliki rice even outside office.’ That was the kind of connection we had,” Umahi recalled.
The Minister also recounted how Buhari once commissioned projects across Ebonyi from morning until late at night, joking afterward about being "punished" by the day’s packed schedule. He further highlighted Buhari’s humility, noting how the airport initially named after him was later renamed after late Senator Chuba Okadigbo — a decision he accepted without fanfare.
“There was nothing I asked of him as a governor that he did not grant — from the Paris Club refund to the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme. He supported us immensely,” he added.
Expressing deep sorrow, Umahi extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, and Nigerians at large, while commending President Tinubu for the respect he continues to show his predecessor.
“We miss him sorely. He was a true statesman, and I thank President Tinubu for honouring him both in life and in death,” he concluded.
