A Political Analyst and Entrepreneur, Chief Anthony Ofoma has said that a five year--single tenure will solve Nigeria's political problems occasioned by the quest for its presidency.
Ofoma made the assertion in an interview noting that the quest for second term in office unduly heats the polity and cause distraction to governance.
The industrialist lamented that a.five-year.single term will make elected leaders concentrate purely on governance and be in a hurry to deliver the goods to the people.
"You can see what is happening at the national and state levels where leaders have started strategising to renew their terms while others are angling for the top shots.
"This has ultimately created tension on the polity with many elected leaders losing focus on governance,"
He noted that all manner of indices would be used to assess leaders in a 5-year single tenure as they would not be returning to the particular seat even if they performed optimally.
"The various regulatory institutions should be strengthened to ensure accountability and probity while punishing those who abused their offices.
"The problem is that those who.looted our treasury while in office are not punished, walk freely and receive accolades from the people they looted from.
"This ultimately gives succeeding leaders the impetus to loot because they know there would not be accountability on their part."
He said the Nigeria needs a viable opposition to thrive to check the excesses of the ruling government.
"The present coalition in the country is welcome but the question remains whether its members can shun personal interest for collective well.
"Most Nigerians are seeing them as people who are disgruntled and it behoves on them to prove such views wrong.
"Nigeria cannot afford to tilt towards one-party state to preserve the democracy we all laboured for."
