The Ebonyi State Government has announced a temporary suspension of flight operations at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Onueke, to enable the completion of critical installations on the runway, including the hookup of airfield lighting systems to the main powerhouse.
Announcing the development in Abakaliki on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, said the decision is in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s vision to build a world-class airport that meets global aviation safety and operational standards.
According to the commissioner, the suspension will last only a few weeks and is intended to allow engineers to safely complete the final phase of the airfield lighting hookup.
"Once operational, the lighting system will enable aircraft to land and take off safely at night and during poor visibility conditions.
“We want to temporarily hold off on flight lifting to enable us to hook up properly to the power chambers. The suspension is very, very temporary and may not last more than three weeks,” Obichukwu stated after inspecting the ongoing work.
She revealed that the 3.1-kilometre runway now boasts of a completed traffic lighting system, a crucial component that guides pilots during landing and takeoff operations in low-visibility conditions.
The current work involves integrating the airfield lighting with constant current regulators and power chambers to ensure full automation and reliability.
“This level of airfield lighting is not only rare in Nigeria but also positions Ebonyi as a key hub for aviation in the region,” said Uchenna Christian, an expert overseeing the lighting installation.
“No runway in Nigeria currently has this type of precision lighting indicator. We are taking every step to ensure safety, which is why flight operations are on hold temporarily," Uchenna added.
The commissioner noted that in just three months since full operations began, the airport has recorded over 75 commercial and chartered flight movements, attracting passengers from surrounding states including Abia, Cross River, Benue, and Imo.
Obichukwu applauded Governor Nwifuru for his unwavering commitment to developing the airport into a fully functional international aviation facility.
“Our dear governor is determined to ensure that all required modern technologies and equipment are installed to make this airport stand tall globally,” she added.
To further boost operations, the government has established a Jet A1 fuel bowser with a 12,000-litre capacity for on-site aircraft refueling. The commissioner confirmed the fueling infrastructure is already in use and will help aircraft with short-range fuel needs refuel quickly and efficiently.
“This project has been completed and it’s essential for aircraft safety and continuity. The bowser will serve us for an initial six-month period and is renewable,” she explained.
Ani Emmanuel, a Director at Stern Energy, confirmed the bowser’s capabilities, noting: “This is a heavy-duty facility and essential for flight operations. It enhances the self-sufficiency of the airport.”
In line with heightened security protocols, Obichukwu also announced that the state government has deployed professional security operatives including retired military personnel to patrol the airport premises, especially the runway, at night. The move is to protect the billion-naira installations and prevent criminal intrusions.
“Security is paramount. We have engaged military, police, and airport guards, including ex-military men from Benue, Kogi, and Cross River states. These professionals are doing marvelously well in securing the facility,” she said.
The Commissioner reiterated that the temporary halt in flight operations is a proactive safety measure and urged passengers, stakeholders, and the general public to remain patient and supportive.
“This short break is to guarantee long-term excellence. We cannot afford to compromise safety, and the Governor is committed to delivering a facility that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best globally.
"The Chuba Okadigbo International Airport is one of the key infrastructural projects under the Nwifuru administration, reflecting the government’s renewed drive toward economic diversification, regional connectivity, and infrastructural excellence," she concluded.
