The Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on New Media, Mr. Leo Oketa, has commended Governor Francis Nwifuru’s sustained investment in vocational and technical education, describing it as a game-changer in tackling youth unemployment and overdependence on government.
Oketa, in a statement on Monday, said the governor’s vocational skills programmes are already yielding measurable results, equipping Ebonyi youths with market-driven skills and creating pathways to self-reliance.
He revealed that the State Ministry of Skill Development and Job Creation would in four days, launch another three-month intensive training programme for 100 youths, focusing on ICT, construction, building, and production.
Areas of training, according to him, would include data analysis, video editing, graphic design, photography, solar and CCTV installation, interior decoration, cream and candle production, wood cladding, paint manufacturing, wig revamping, and entrepreneurship.
“Upon completion, participants will receive empowerment support to establish their own ventures. This is a clear demonstration of Governor Nwifuru’s steadfast commitment to aligning skills acquisition with market demands,” Oketa stated.
He noted that the administration has already partnered with professional bodies and agencies such as NASENI to train youths in modern electrical installation techniques, providing them with the necessary tools for work.
The government has also collaborated with BERWO to skill young people in fashion design, hairdressing, barbing, shoemaking, and almaco glass construction, in addition to agribusiness training conducted in Enugu.
According to him, these efforts directly address the skills gap between formal education and labour market needs, a challenge faced by many economies.
“Governor Nwifuru believes vocational and technical education is key to revamping our education sector and driving economic growth. His administration’s approach promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, technological advancement, and lifelong learning in line with the People’s Charter of Needs,” Oketa added.
He stressed that the overall goal is to reduce unemployment, foster self-sufficiency, and boost Ebonyi State’s economic competitiveness.
