As part of activities marking its 2025 Press Week, the Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has donated food and essential supplies to the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans and the Helpless, located in Oterufie, Ugwuachara, Abakaliki.
The NUJ delegation, led by the State Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, visited the orphanage to show solidarity and support for the foundation’s humanitarian work. Items donated include bags of rice, cartons of noodles, diapers, tomatoes, detergents, and children’s beds.
Comrade Nwafor explained that the charity visit is a core part of NUJ’s Press Week tradition, aimed at identifying with and supporting the less privileged.
“Journalism is not only about reporting events but it’s a humanitarian service. Each year, during our Press Week, we take time to give back to society by reaching out to the vulnerable. This visit reflects that commitment,” he stated.
He also expressed concern over the condition of the orphanage, pledging that the NUJ would use its media platforms to raise awareness and attract more support from the public.
“We were here last year and saw the challenges. Though we lack the resources to fix everything, we will continue to use our voice to tell your story and draw public attention to your needs.”
Responding, the foundation’s coordinator, Sister Emelesina Ani, thanked the NUJ for the gesture, describing it as timely and impactful. She noted that many of the children lost their parents at birth and are entirely dependent on the foundation for shelter, education, and care.
“We’re sincerely grateful. Most people don’t know we exist, yet we’re caring for many children — some in nursery and primary school, others in secondary. We face severe challenges including overcrowding, flooding, and lack of a perimeter fence. We need more support,” she appealed.
The visit underscores NUJ’s broader commitment to community service, advocacy for the vulnerable, and the use of journalism as a tool for social good.
