As Anambra State gears up for its November 8 governorship election, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Queen Agwu has confirmed that a total of 2.8 million registered voters are set to participate in the exercise. Speaking at a recent strategy dialogue in Abuja, Agwu outlined critical preparations aimed at ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election.
Agwu revealed that ahead of the polls, about 140,907 newly registered voters would receive their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before the week ends, bolstering the voter base.
She also confirmed the deployment of 978 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines across 5,720 polling units in the state, designed to enhance the credibility of the voting process.
“All ballot papers and result sheets are polling unit-specific to prevent fraud and misuse,” Agwu explained.
“We have secured all BVAS devices, which have been fully charged and are ready for use. Sensitive electoral materials are stored under strict supervision at the Central Bank of Nigeria," she further said.
On security, Agwu reassured that officers across Anambra’s three senatorial districts have undergone thorough training ahead of the election.
The police, represented by Assistant Commissioner Ekulu Remijius, echoed the readiness of all security agencies to safeguard the electoral process, promising a safe environment for voters.
With 16 political parties and their candidates cleared to contest, the REC emphasized that all legal provisions of the Electoral Act have been followed meticulously. She also stressed her personal commitment to neutrality, stating, “No one has ever asked me to favor any candidate. I am here to serve Nigeria and conduct a credible election.”
As Anambra prepares to cast its ballots, confidence is high that the election will be conducted fairly, reflecting the will of the people.
