The Ebonyi State Government has directed that all commercial vehicles operating within the state must now be painted in the official state colours—green, white, and green and clearly display their designated routes as part of its bold move to sanitize urban transport and ensure public safety in the state.
This directive is part of broader transport reforms aimed at curbing traffic congestion, eliminating illegal motor parks, and promoting an organized and efficient transport system in the capital city, Abakaliki.
The Commissioner for Transport and Special Projects, Prince Collins Emeka Igboke, made this known during a press briefing on Tuesday, revealing that commercial drivers had requested a one-month grace period to comply with the new rule. He confirmed that full enforcement will begin immediately after the deadline expires.
“This initiative aims to establish a safer and more efficient transport system for both residents and visitors. We are committed to restoring order on our roads and will not hesitate to sanction defaulters once the grace period expires,” the Commissioner warned.
In addition to the new vehicle colour code, the state government has shut down several illegal motor parks and instructed all commercial operators to use only approved parks and designated bus stops. These include Akanu Ibiam Park, Spera-in-Deo, His Royal Highness Ezeogo Igboke Ewa Central Park (opposite the International Market), Senator Chris Nwankwo Park (EBSU-Ishieke Park), and EBOTRANS Park in the Nwokpo area.
Furthermore, specific bus stops such as Ezzangbo Junction, Ishieke Junction, Ukwuachi, PDP Office, Aghia-Ofu Market, G-Hostel Junction, Area Command, and Obodo Park have been earmarked for boarding and alighting with strict rules against using unauthorized locations.
The Commissioner emphasized that manifests must be properly filled, operational fees paid, and safety protocols followed at all times.
He urged all transport operators to fully comply with the new measures to avoid sanctions after the grace period.
