A serious case of armed assault, looting, and threat to life has been reported against the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Ehamufu Mass Transit, Enugu State.
The incident, which allegedly occurred on October 6, 2025, at a government-approved checkpoint in Emaezu Community, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, is now drawing urgent calls for intervention from human rights advocates.
In a petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, the Human Rights Aids and Social Justice Initiative (HRASJI) alleged that Mr. Lucky Joseph and Hon. Kenneth, both staff at the checkpoint, were violently attacked by the transit officials and a group of armed thugs.
According to the petition signed by HRASJI Chairman, Ibeabuchi Levi Ajah, the attackers used weapons including guns, machetes, bottles, and wooden planks studded with nails during the assault. Mr. Joseph reportedly sustained severe injuries to the head and body, while the small office structure at the checkpoint was destroyed.
The petition further claims the attackers stole ₦165,000 meant for government remittance, along with personal and operational items such as clothing, a power bank, a cooking gas cylinder, two new wheelbarrows, and cooking utensils.
The group also allegedly dismantled barricades made of chippings and sharp sand used to control traffic at the checkpoint.
HRASJI warned that the actions of the suspects could provoke tension between Ebonyi and Enugu States if left unchecked, and called on the police to urgently provide protection, recover stolen items, and prosecute the culprits.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has yet to issue an official response as of press time.
