Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has called on Ebonyians to embrace hope, unity, and resilience as the nation marks its 65th Independence Anniversary and Ebonyi celebrates 29 years of statehood.
In a statement issued in Abakaliki on Wednesday, Dr. Chukwuma said that the day should be more than a celebration but also a “moment of deep reflection” on the nation’s journey through poverty, leadership gaps, and economic hardship.
Speaking as “a brother, son, and partner in progress,” the PDP chieftain lamented the plight of farmers unable to maximize the state’s fertile lands, the struggles of unemployed youths, poor access to healthcare, and the dashed hopes of children deprived of quality education.
“Ebonyi deserves more, and Ebonyi will rise,” he declared, stressing that independence should go beyond liberation from colonial rule to freedom from internal setbacks and the courage to build a brighter future.
Dr. Chukwuma warned against “savagely scavenging politicians who sweet-mouth the people in fear of opposition,” urging Ebonyians to take ownership of their destiny and make wise choices when the time comes.
He reaffirmed his conviction that with the right leadership, Ebonyi’s resources could be transformed into prosperity and dignity for every household.
“As we celebrate this day, let it ignite in us a new faith that change is not only possible, it is within reach,” he said.
The former governorship hopeful concluded with prayers for Ebonyi State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
