President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement (South-East), Chioma Nweze, has applauded the National Assembly for approving the creation of an additional state in the South-East, describing the move as a major step toward equity and national balance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nweze said the legislative approval corrects a decades-long structural imbalance that has left the South-East as the only geopolitical zone with five states including Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, and Enugu while other zones have six or seven.
“This bold decision by the National Assembly marks a historic moment for justice and inclusion. For too long, the South-East has faced limited representation in governance and resource allocation due to this imbalance," he said.
She commended the Joint Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for approving the new state during its retreat in Lagos from October 24 to 25, 2025, describing the action as “a constitutional correction, not a political victory.”
Nweze also lauded the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for their leadership and fairness, while appreciating South-East governors, ministers, and public officials for their unity and advocacy.
“Their collective voice and strategic engagement made this breakthrough possible,” she noted. “It reaffirms that Nigeria can work for all regions when equity guides our national decisions.”
The presidential aide urged both chambers of the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly to ensure the proposal scales through the remaining constitutional stages.
“This is a defining moment for all Nigerians who believe in justice to support the South-East’s rightful inclusion.
“The creation of a new state will strengthen national unity, deepen representation, and give our people a renewed sense of belonging," she said.
Nweze reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to building an inclusive Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda, where fairness and balance underpin governance.
