Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbott, a former Senator for Adamawa North has denied reports linking him to the rape of a minor, dismissing the allegation as “baseless, unfounded, and mischievous.”Media reports on Thursday claimed that the embattled lawmaker was in police custody over the alleged incident, said to have occurred in June this year.
But in a swift reaction on Friday in Abuja, Abbo insisted he was never arrested, stressing that he spent the entire day at his residence in Katampe Extension, Abuja.
“The said report is the handiwork of my political detractors. It is an orchestrated smear campaign to disturb my peace,” he told journalists in a telephone conversation.
He further disclosed that he had earlier petitioned the Police against a woman who allegedly attempted to blackmail him for ₦5 million.
“I personally reported the desperate female money monger to the Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). We were both invited for questioning, only for me to start reading or hearing an entirely different story weeks after,” he said.
Meanwhile, the family of the alleged victim accused Abbo of trying to silence them by offering money to the girl’s father. They also alleged that Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani, the 2023 Adamawa governorship candidate, visited them to persuade them to drop the case.
The controversy adds to the string of scandals that have dogged Abbo’s career. In 2019, he was caught on camera assaulting a woman at a sex toy shop in Abuja. He has also previously been accused of attempting to blackmail a married woman with an alleged sex tape.
