The Uburu community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has thrown its full support behind the expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), clearing Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, of allegations of land grabbing.
In a statement signed by traditional and community leaders, including HRH Lazarus Umahi, Chief Shedrack Onu, and Chief Odi Nicholas Enyi, the community emphasized that the expansion is a collective initiative conceived and endorsed by the Uburu Traditional Council.
The council warned that any further use of the community name by petitioners seeking to challenge the project would be “totally unacceptable.”
The DUFUHS land expansion committee, led by Coordinator Dr. Umezurike Daniel and Secretary Mr. Odi Nicholas Enyi, outlined the transparent steps taken to acquire additional land.
The process included public awareness campaigns, engagement with affected landowners, securing written consent, and providing compensation to all 29 verified landowners.
“All procedures were followed meticulously. At no point did Sen. David Umahi or any government official engage in intimidation, threats, or land grabbing,” the committee stated.
Community leaders described the expansion as a transformative project for Uburu, bringing employment, pride, and sustainable development to the area.
They condemned attempts by a few individuals to exploit local divisions for personal interests, affirming the community’s unwavering support for the university’s growth.
“This expansion is a vital initiative that will benefit current and future generations,” the communiqué concluded.
