An education-focused institution, White Cloud Schools, has called for the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Nigeria’s school curriculum to help young learners develop a deeper understanding of global development priorities and their role in achieving them.
The call was made during the Young Changemakers SDG Summit organized by the institution in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, with the theme “Small Hands, Big Impact: Driving the Global Goals.”
The summit aimed to educate pupils on the importance of the SDGs and inspire them to make positive contributions toward building a sustainable future.
Speaking at the event, the Founder and Director of White Cloud Schools, Mrs. Chika Agwu, emphasized that early exposure to the SDGs would help children cultivate the right values and mindset for innovation, leadership, and global citizenship.
“Embedding the Sustainable Development Goals into the national curriculum will not only enhance students’ academic experience but also equip them with the knowledge and responsibility needed to address real-world challenges,” Agwu stated.
She explained that the initiative targets primary and secondary school pupils, aiming to instill in them the spirit of excellence, discipline, and purpose in line with the vision of the school and global best practices.
In her remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Esther Nwogha, commended White Cloud Schools for their foresight and dedication to nurturing future leaders.
She noted that the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru remains committed to supporting programs that align with the People’s Charter of Needs and promote youth development.
“This summit plants a seed of purpose and vision in our children. Such efforts are essential in building a generation that will sustain the values of innovation, integrity, and responsibility,” Nwogha said.
The event was attended by stakeholders from the education, health, and development sectors, as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations.
Pupils from basic classes one to six made creative presentations demonstrating their understanding of the 17 SDGs.
Adopted by the United Nations in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals serve as a global blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030.
White Cloud Schools’ advocacy reflects a growing recognition of the need to integrate these goals into Nigeria’s educational system to foster sustainable development and global awareness among young learners.
