There is heightened tension in Ataroga, a border community between Ebonyi and Benue States, following the killing of more than 40 cows by suspected gunmen.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday, sparking fear and displacement among residents.
Ataroga, an Izzi-speaking community in Ado Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has been largely deserted, with reports of houses destroyed and properties looted.
A viral video circulating on social media shows distressed residents calling for urgent government and security intervention.
In the footage, a community member alleged that Igede attackers invaded the area around 4 a.m., killed the cattle, chased away herdsmen, and triggered reprisals that have left locals vulnerable.
He insisted the Izzi people are not responsible for the killings and appealed directly to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for protection.
Residents also claimed that herdsmen have retaliated, allegedly burning homes and killing people in the community.
Security agencies have reportedly made some arrests, but tension remains high as investigations continue.
