The coalition alleged that El-Rufai, during a national television interview, claimed that an individual had tapped the phone of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and enabled him to listen to private conversations.
Describing the alleged statement as “deeply troubling” and “a direct assault on the integrity of Nigeria’s security architecture,” the group warned that if true, such an interception would constitute a grave violation of Nigerian law.
According to the coalition, the Office of the National Security Adviser occupies a central role in coordinating intelligence operations and safeguarding the country against both internal and external threats.
Any compromise of its communication systems, they argued, could have far-reaching implications for national sovereignty and stability.
In a joint statement signed by Ifeanyi O. Blackson, Abbey Georgewill, Ediri Tare Ogheneovo, Nsika Okon Moses, Toritseju O. Menetie, and Akintoye Adedeji Prince, the leaders called for El-Rufai to be invited for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Ifeanyi O. Blackson stated that the alleged admission, if verified, represents “a grave violation of national security protocols” and urged the DSS to act swiftly.
Abbey Georgewill emphasized that no political ambition should override the sanctity of Nigeria’s intelligence institutions, adding that decisive action would reassure citizens that the nation’s security framework remains intact.
Ediri Tare Ogheneovo described the development as “an alarming revelation,” insisting that any unauthorized interception of the NSA’s communications must attract legal consequences, regardless of status or influence.
Nsika Okon Moses warned that failure to investigate the matter could set a dangerous precedent where sensitive state communications are treated casually.
Toritseju O. Menetie called for transparency in any investigative process, stressing that Nigerians deserve clarity on whether such a breach occurred and who was responsible.
Akintoye Adedeji Prince, in his remarks, urged President Tinubu to demonstrate zero tolerance for any action capable of undermining national security institutions, stating that accountability remains essential to preserving public trust.
The coalition further appealed to the DSS and other relevant authorities to launch what it described as a full-scale and independent probe.
It also urged El-Rufai to provide detailed clarification regarding the identity of the individual allegedly involved in the phone interception and the circumstances surrounding the claim.
As of the time of filing this report, El-Rufai had not issued an official statement addressing the coalition’s demand. Federal authorities have also not confirmed whether any formal investigation has commenced.
The development has sparked debate across political and civil society circles, with observers warning that if not handled transparently and lawfully, the controversy could deepen political divisions at a time when national unity and security cohesion remain critical.
