---Pedges inclusive review with student representatives
In a decisive demonstration of student-centered leadership, the management of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) has suspended a proposed tuition fee adjustment, following expressions of concern from the student body.
The directive, issued by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Joseph Ugboaja, reflects a strategic balance between institutional development imperatives and the socio-economic realities facing students.
The proposed increase, which sought to raise tuition from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 to support NAUTH’s transition into a premier ND/HND monotechnic, was met with widespread apprehension by students.
Responding with characteristic empathy and administrative prudence, Ugboaja immediately suspended the increment, restoring the previous fee structure while instituting mechanisms for collaborative review.
“Our objective remains the creation of a world-class institution, but this must never compromise the welfare of our students. We are committed to a participatory process that integrates the perspectives of our students and ensures sustainable solutions," he said.
To institutionalize transparency and inclusivity, the CMD has established a joint Review Committee comprising members of the School Management, Governing Board, and Student Representatives.
This committee is tasked with harmonizing a fee structure that aligns with the institution’s strategic vision while mitigating undue financial burden on students.
The decision has been widely lauded as an exemplary model of academic leadership that emphasizes participatory governance, stakeholder engagement, and ethical administration. Interviews conducted with students, including coverage by Blaze FM, revealed a shift from initial tension to a climate of confidence and appreciation.
Student representatives described the CMD as a “compassionate and responsive leader” whose intervention restored institutional harmony and reaffirmed trust in NAUTH’s management.
Academic activities, which had been momentarily disrupted, have now resumed fully, with lectures proceeding as scheduled. The incident underscores NAUTH’s commitment to providing quality medical education and healthcare services within a framework of equitable and empathetic leadership.
Since assuming office, Prof. Ugboaja has overseen a transformative agenda at NAUTH, expanding the facility from a 300-bed hospital to a modern 2,000-bed institution at its permanent site.
Recent infrastructural advancements include the installation of a state-of-the-art 1.5T MRI machine as part of the hospital’s Radiodiagnostic Project, further consolidating its status as a premier medical training and healthcare facility in the region.
