Tension flared in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Monday following a dramatic rejection of alleged attempts to impose political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development unfolded at the residence of former senator Anthony Agbo in Umuogudu Akpu, Ngbo, where a gathering of political stakeholders and community leaders was convened to deliberate on zoning and endorsements within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At the centre of the controversy was the lawmaker representing Ohaukwu North State Constituency, Esther Agwu, whose alleged endorsement for a second term sparked strong resistance from sections of the constituency.
According to a viral video clip, in which the Regent of Umuogudu Oshia Community, Chief Uche Aliega, addressed attendees, several stakeholders reportedly opposed her re-election bid, describing it as inconsistent with the principles of equity, fairness and justice.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that dissenting voices disrupted proceedings at intervals, underscoring deep divisions among party faithful and community representatives over the endorsement process.
The meeting, however, proceeded with the backing of key political figures, including Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, both of whom were endorsed for second terms alongside other candidates.
Also endorsed were Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District; Eze Nwachukwu, representing Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency; and Chinedu Onah, representing Ohaukwu South State Constituency, for their respective positions under the APC platform.
In a related development, a frontline aspirant for the House of Representatives seat in Ohaukwu/Ebonyi Federal Constituency, Sunday Elechi Inyima, popularly known as Agbalagba, announced his withdrawal from the National Assembly race.
His decision, according to sources, is believed to be linked to the outcome of the endorsement process, which effectively narrowed the field of contenders.
Despite efforts by conveners of the meeting to project unity, the endorsement of Mrs Agwu remained a flashpoint.
Critics at the gathering questioned her performance in office, while supporters argued for continuity and party cohesion.
The motion endorsing her candidacy was eventually moved by leaders from the Umuogudu Oshia Autonomous Community and seconded by other stakeholders, signalling what observers described as a reluctant consensus amid lingering dissatisfaction.
Addressing the gathering, stakeholders emphasised the need for internal cohesion within the APC, noting that the endorsements were aimed at consolidating governance gains and ensuring political stability across Ebonyi State.
They further called on party members and residents of Ohaukwu to align with the decisions reached and mobilise support for the endorsed candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, political observers said the events in Ohaukwu may signal underlying fractures within local party structures, raising questions about the sustainability of consensus-building efforts as the election cycle approaches.
