The Ebonyi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its internal authority and disciplinary framework by ratifying the suspension of Barrister Silas Onu, described by party officials as a “factional chairman,” over alleged anti-party activities and constitutional breaches.
The decision was reached at a State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held at the party’s secretariat along the old Abakaliki–Enugu corridor, where members unanimously endorsed the earlier sanction imposed by the Obiozara Ward in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Reading from the official communication, the State Secretary, Comrade Chukwudi Mgboroko, stated that the three-month suspension followed findings of gross misconduct, including alleged falsification of party structures and misrepresentation of leadership status.
According to the party, Onu had “paraded himself in public spaces and media platforms as the duly elected state chairman,” a claim the SEC dismissed as unfounded and inconsistent with the party’s verified records.
The statement further noted that ward executives had no prior engagement with Onu and questioned the legitimacy of his membership documentation, alleging misuse of the party’s online registration system.
“The actions in question have not only generated internal disquiet but also exposed the party to reputational risk at the national level,” the Secretary said, underscoring the SEC’s resolve to uphold discipline and institutional order.
A motion for ratification was formally moved by the State Coordinator for Electoral Matters and INEC Liaison, Bassey Imoke-Edogi, and seconded by the State Auditor, Vincent Eze, before receiving unanimous approval by the committee.
In her remarks, the State Chairman, Dr. Mrs. Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, said the party’s action was guided by constitutional provisions and the imperative to safeguard unity and administrative coherence within its ranks.
She stressed that members are obligated to conduct themselves in line with established norms and party statutes.
“The conduct under review constitutes a clear violation of the party’s constitution and undermines the principles of discipline, cohesion, and orderly administration,” she said.
Adibe-Nwafor further clarified that the sanction effectively bars Onu from all party activities at ward, local government, state, and national levels for the duration of the suspension.
According to her, Onu is also prohibited from presenting himself as an official or representative of the party in any capacity pending the outcome of ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
Party officials indicated that the measure remains subject to further review by the appropriate disciplinary organs, in accordance with the ADC constitution.
The development came amid heightened political activity in the state, as the party prepares for upcoming primaries.
The leadership disclosed that expressions of interest have been recorded for various elective positions, including governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats, signaling an intensifying internal mobilization ahead of future electoral contests.
