An Ebonyi-born legal practitioner, Barrister Alfred N. Nwizi, has been formally sworn in as a Notary Public of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The oath of office was administered by the Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Hon. Justice Elvis Anagu Ngene, acting under the delegated authority of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The brief but solemn ceremony took place at the High Court Complex in Abakaliki, marking a significant professional milestone for the legal practitioner. His appointment was approved in accordance with the provisions of the Notaries Public Act.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the ceremony on Friday, Nwizi described the elevation as both an honour and a call to higher responsibility within the legal profession.
He noted that the office of a Notary Public carries statutory obligations that require strict adherence to due process, ethical standards, and professional diligence.
“As a Notary Public, one is entrusted with the authentication of legal documents, administration of oaths, and attestation of signatures for both domestic and international purposes. This responsibility demands not only competence but also integrity and caution in the discharge of duties,” he said.
Nwizi, who is the Principal of Alfred N. Nwizi Law Firm, Abakaliki, and currently serves as Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abakaliki Branch, further explained that the conferment followed a rigorous application and vetting process.
This process included verification of professional standing, years of legal practice, and compliance with regulatory requirements of the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as proof of an independently registered legal practice.
According to him, eligibility for appointment requires a minimum of seven years’ post-call experience, evidence of consistent professional development, and demonstrable good character, in line with statutory provisions.
He emphasised that a Notary Public must exercise due diligence in verifying the authenticity of documents presented for notarisation, warning that failure to do so could attract disciplinary measures, including suspension, as stipulated under the governing law.
Nwizi also underscored the global relevance of notarised instruments, noting that documents authenticated by a Notary Public are recognised across jurisdictions, thereby facilitating cross-border legal and commercial transactions.
Advising younger members of the Bar, he urged diligence, perseverance, and commitment to professional ethics, stressing that elevation within the legal profession is anchored on merit, consistency, and integrity.
“This is not merely a title but a responsibility. Young lawyers must remain focused, build capacity, and uphold the values of the profession. With time and dedication, they too can attain this height,” he said.
By virtue of the appointment, Nwizi becomes an officer of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, with powers circumscribed by statute to perform notarial acts under regulated conditions.
