Stakeholders across the Ebonyi North Senatorial District have unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing the district, Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, endorsing his performance in office and expressing support for his anticipated re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement came during a series of constituency engagement meetings and consultations held across Izzi and Ebonyi Local Government Areas, where the senator presented his stewardship report and reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development and inclusive representation.
Speaking during the engagements, Senator Nwebonyi said his decision to deepen consultations with constituents was driven by the need for periodic accountability, stressing that “it is time to take stock from the people we represent, as they are ultimately the true evaluators of our mandate.”
He said feedback from constituents had been largely positive, noting that “my people are very happy with my representation. They are seeing my projects, and they are satisfied with my style of service at the Red Chamber.”
The senator further maintained that while party structures remain central to electoral decisions, grassroots support remains a critical indicator of political legitimacy.
Highlighting his achievements, Nwebonyi listed infrastructural interventions across education and rural development sectors, including the construction and rehabilitation of schools, provision of classroom furniture for pupils and teachers, distribution of empowerment tools such as motorcycles and buses, scholarship schemes for indigent students, and intervention in road projects across communities in the senatorial district.
He disclosed that over 500 indigent students were currently benefiting from his scholarship programme, describing it as part of his long-term investment in human capital development.
According to him, “leadership is about solving people’s problems, not personal gain. The people must come first.”
He also emphasized his commitment to quality and durability in project execution, noting that his infrastructural interventions were guided by strict standards, including the use of high-grade construction materials to ensure longevity.
At Iboko, the Izzi council headquarters, the Chairman of Izzi Local Government Area, Barr. Steve Emenike Nwankpa, applauded the senator’s achievements, saying he had distinguished himself in office.
“We are here because our brother, whom we elected to represent us at the National Assembly, has performed well,” Nwankpa said, adding that consultations ahead of the next electoral cycle were appropriate and timely.
Other prominent stakeholders, including Chief Elias Mbam, Vincent Nwibo, and the APC Chairman in Izzi LGA, Odili Okoye, also passed votes of confidence on the senator.
They urged him to continue consolidating his achievements while calling on party leadership to ensure fairness and adherence to zoning and electoral procedures in the selection of candidates.
Okoye stressed the importance of performance-based political reward systems, arguing that electoral support should reflect measurable contributions at the grassroots level.
At Ebonyi Local Government Area, the Principal Secretary to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Matthias Adum, commended the senator’s performance, describing him as a legislator who has maintained close consultation with elders, party stakeholders, and community leaders.
Adum said the senator’s approach to governance reflects responsiveness and political maturity. However, he emphasized that the process of candidate emergence must follow party guidelines, noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state remains guided by due process, internal democracy, and leadership direction under the state governor.
Other stakeholders of the LGA including the Council Chairman, Prince Chinedu Uburu; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Uchenna Igwe; former deputy governorship candidate of the APC, Chief Mbam Ogodo; and other political actors also commended the senator’s performance.
They, however, advised him to continue broad consultations within party structures ahead of the primaries.
Across the engagements, stakeholders consistently described Senator Nwebonyi’s legislative and constituency interventions as “visible, impactful, and people-oriented,” while urging continuity in representation.
