The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has petitioned the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, over the alleged misconduct of the Senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, Kenneth Chukwuemeka Eze, following an alleged attack on journalists during the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election in the state.
The journalists accused Senator Eze, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, of allegedly assaulting the Chairman of the NUJ in Ebonyi State, Comrade Samson Nwafor, alongside other media practitioners at Onueke, headquarters of Ezza South Local Government Area, on Monday, 18th May 2026.
In a strongly worded statement signed by the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Uchenna Inya, the union described the incident as “an attack on the entire journalism profession” and a direct threat to press freedom and democratic accountability in the state.
The chapel condemned what it termed “intimidation, harassment and physical assault” against journalists carrying out their constitutional responsibilities as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
According to the statement, the union demanded that Senator Eze publicly apologise to the media within 24 hours or risk being blacklisted by journalists in the state.
The journalists further alleged that one Kizito Nwankwo, said to be an aide to the senator, threatened to deal with any journalist who publishes reports concerning the incident.
The chapel warned that Senator Eze and his associates should be held responsible should any harm befall any journalist in the state.
The union also called on the Senate President to immediately remove Senator Eze as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, arguing that his alleged conduct falls short of the expectations attached to such a sensitive public office.
“The Senator should live up to the expectations of his office and desist from intimidating, attacking and harassing journalists in the discharge of their professional duties,” the statement added.
The Correspondents’ Chapel recalled that Senator Eze was recently involved in a heated verbal altercation with a senatorial aspirant, Chief Christian Asaga Nwali, during a burial ceremony in Amudo, Ezza South Local Government Area, an incident it said embarrassed stakeholders and heightened political tension in the area.
Efforts to reach Senator Eze or his aides for comments on the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
