Govenor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State has urged the Judiciary to ensure that the protection of the national interest supersedes every other human fundamental right in the country.
He made this appeal on Tuesday, during the 2021/2022 Legal Year at High Court of Justice Complex, Abakaliki.
He lamented the challenges facing the country's judiciary system and however, urged the Judiciary to stand firm to optimally defend the unity of all Nigerians.
"The judiciary in Nigeria in general is having challenges.
"We want to urge you that the national interest should supersede every other human fundamental right," Umahi urged.
Earlier, Governor David Nweze Umahi in a message he delivered at the legal year's inter-denominational church service held at St Peter's Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, stressed the need for quick dispensation of Justice by the State Judiciary.
The Governor represented by his Deputy, Barr Kelechi Igwe renewed the determination of his administration to support Ebonyi State Judiciary to advance the course of quick Justice delivery.
In his words, "It is our full determination as a State to stand with Ebonyi State Judiciary in advancing the course of the quick dispensation of Justice and we are proud to say that this onerous task has been well kept by you."
He noted that the occasion was another opportunity of stock taking and reevaluation of the success recorded in the state Judiciary for the past one year.
The Governor commended the State Chief Judge , Justice Elvis Ngene for his accomplishments within the period he assumed office and for his avowed committment to a sound legal system in Ebonyi State.
In a sermon, the Minister in charge of PCN, Abakaliki Urban Parish, Most Rev. Torty Onoh urged the Judiciary to see themselves as the last hope of the ordinary citizens by ensuring that justice is given to all manner of people without oppression. He congratulated them and prayed for God's protection in discharge of their responsibilities.
The interdenominational Church service which had in attendance Judiciary officers, top government functionaries and CAN representatives featured a special Thanksgiving by the State Judiciary.
