A few days ago, it was reported by the News Telegraph, that the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, is planning to step down from the race for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 presidential ticket.
Recall that before now, the former Speaker of Federal House of Representatives, has been rumoured to have his eyes fixed on the 2023 Presidency.
However, reports have emerged, revealing that the number one citizen of Sokoto State, could be dropping his 2023 presidential ambitions in the coming days. As gathered from the report, the Governor is being compelled to drop his alleged 2023 presidential ambitions, due to the likelihood that the PDP may be unwilling to zone its presidential ticket to the Northwest, considering that the region has produced two Presidents since Nigeria returned to democratic rule.
With this, Tambuwal is said to be considering going to the Senate. Recall that for a while now, many Nigerians have continued to argue that Governor Tambuwal is one of the favourites to emerge as the party’s flag-bearer. This is due to the insistence of the PDP Governors, on having one of them fly the party’s flag in 2023. However, with his alleged plot to step down from the race for the 2023 Presidency, the odds could favour Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, and the Vice Presidential candidate of the party, for the 2019 presidential election.
This is due to the fact that the PDP in its quest to return to power, would likely opt for a candidate that is acceptable by Nigerians irrespective of ethnicity or religion. Arguably, Tambuwal is also an acceptable candidate to many Nigerians. However, if the Sokoto state governor should step down from the race for the 2023 Presidency, as reported by the News Telegraph, the situation could clear the coast for Peter Obi, who is also an acceptable candidate.
Recall that for a while now, many Nigerians have continued to call on the former Governor to declare for President. However, he is yet to officially declare, but recently asked a Tweep to give him more time. With this, Tambuwal’s alleged plot to step down from the race for the 2023 Presidency, could favour Peter Obi, as he can be arguably seen, as the party’s most viable option. This could aid his rumoured 2023 presidential ambitions, and help him to emerge as the PDP’s flag-bearer for the 2023 presidential election.
