The Correspondent of the Independent Newspaper in Ebonyi, Comrade Nwafor Samson has emerged as the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the State.
Mr Nwafor who is the immediate past Chairman of Correspondents' Chapel of NUJ, Ebonyi State, was unanimously elected following a bye-election that was held, on Tuesday, at Dr Sam Egwu Press Centre, Abakaliki.
The bye-election was a sequel to the resignation of the immediate past Chairman of NU in the State, Comrade Tony Nwizi, who was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Information and Communication and Technology, ICT to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Francis Nwifuru.
The Chairman, of the bye-election Credentials Committee, Mr Emeka Opara while announcing the result before the teeming members of the Union on Tuesday, declared that Comrade Nwafor emerged unopposed and was returned elected.
Opara thanked members for their support and solidarity which made the exercise a success.
Speaking, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzor, who was represented by the Vice President of NUJ, South-East zone, Mr Emmanuel Ifesinachi, commended members of Ebonyi State chapter of NUJ for living up to their professional responsibilities.
He described Nwafor as the substantive chairman of the union in the state, following his successful election and taking oath of office.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Comrade Nwafor Samson, thanked his members for finding him worthy to serve.
"In fact, I'm overwhelmed by your massive support and solidarity; and one thing I will say is that I'm challenged to double my good effort to make NUJ Ebonyi State Council proud.
"I will not allow this council to go backwards, but to always seek your cooperation, make you understand this is a journey for the better welfare of our members," Nwafor said.
