Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has charged the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ to galvanize its members to live up to expectations of providing information, enlightenment and holding public officers accountable as watchdogs of the society
Nwifuru asserted this while congratulating Samson Nwafor of Daily Independent Newspaper on his emergence as the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The state governor in his congratulatory message to Nwafor which was made available to journalists in Abakaliki, by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, on Thursday, advised him to be magnanimous with victory.
He described his bye-election which led to the emergence of Nwafor as the State NUJ Chairman as a true reflection of the choice of his members and the implicit confidence they reposed in him.
"As you assume office, I charge you to galvanize your members to live up to expectations of providing information, enlightenment and holding public officers accountable as watchdogs of the society.
"You must also use your new position to promote development journalism and discourage sensationalism and fake news," Nwifuru said.
While commending the members of NUJ for a peaceful bye-election, Governor Nwifuru stressed the need for journalists in the State to partner with his administration in the task of providing quality leadership to the people.
He assured the new NUJ Boss that his administration will offer maximum support to enable him to deliver on his mandate.
