Ebonyi State Governor, Builder Francis Nwifuru has condemned the corrupt activities characterizing the local government system nowadays.
The governor made the condemnation during the swearing-in of the chairmen and members of the state boards and commissions, on Tuesday at the Executive council chambers in Ochudo Centenary City, Abakaliki.
He frowned at the situation where the local government chairmen influenced the posting of Head of Personnel Management and Treasurers to them without recourse to the scheme of service.
The governor in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Monday Uzor however, challenged the chairman and members of the local government system to immediately correct the anomalies in the system.
Nwifuru said: "Our local government system is badly challenged, most of the council Chairmen influence the posting of Heads of Personnel Management and Treasurers to them without recourse to the scheme of service.
"It is only there you can see a junior heading a Senior. Where a level 13 Will be made a treasurer whereas a level 15 officer will be an Internal Auditor is unacceptable. In the service, people should wait for their turn."
Governor Nwifuru also warned the Board of Internal Revenue against the imposition of levies and tax on petty business, saying the act is capable of inflicting hardship on the people.
He said: "Collecting levies and tolls from women selling vegetables and groundnuts will inflict hardship on the people.
"Therefore I challenge you to rather look for those who have mansions and yet they are not paying taxes. "
He explained that the reconstitution of the boards and commissions has become imperative to drive his development agenda in the state, charging their members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence.
Governor Nwifuru equally charged the state civil service commission to begin the process of training and re-training the State workforce for optimum performance.
"I want you to improve our relationship with our workers and also ensure they are trained. The Head of Service should work with the Civil Service Commission to do this.
"We must always show example because when the workers are trained they will be more equipped to do the job," the governor hinted.
