An Ebonyi female activist and the Chief Executive Officer of the Akunna Foundation for Vulnernerable Aged Widows and Orphans, Mrs Fortuna Okey has urged widows to adopt virtuous lives.
Mrs Okey, who is also the Coordinator of the Network of Non-Governmental Organizations, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, Faithbased Organizations and Voluntary Organisations, Vos in Ebonyi State gave this advice during the International Widows Day (IWD) for the year 2024.
She said, widows should consider themselves as overcomers when they put their trust in God, thereby shunning any attitude that would lure pitifulness in them.
"It's a very pathetic journey that pierces the heart, a journey without God one will crash but with God, you're an over-comer for he is the husband of the widows.
"When you as a widow allow God to marry you, believe me, you will lack nothing, for He will supply your daily needs.
"Some see widowhood as a challenge and stand up for their children by being a virtuous woman while some see it as an avenue to be pitied and become lousy and go astray.
"Remember widowhood is not condemnation but a challenge to still overcome with God. Society should not see widowhood to be mimicked, misused, rejected, taking advantage of whereby forcefully collecting what their late husband left behind forgetting they can't do such if their husband had been alive, not having in mind that part of what that man left behind will be used in training those children that are still theirs.
"This wickedness must be put to a halt, some widows fall sick out of maltreatment being melted on them.
"My joy is that our Amazon Queen, our mother per excellence, the epitome of womanhood, her Excellency Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru is doing her best to stop the menace through her BERWO Foundation.
"My NGO known as Akunna Foundation for Vulnernerable Aged Widows and Orphans is not left out.
"Please, let's all join hands and say no to the maltreatment melted on widows. They didn't choose to be widows neither is it a nickname.
"God bless all of us as we speak out for the widows and downtrodden. Make tomorrow a memorable day for them nothing is too small to share with them, try a little kindness and put a smile on their faces.
"God bless all of us as we keep putting smiles on their faces."
