MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CHIEFTAINCY MATTERS EBONYI STATE WITHIN ONE YEAR IN OFFICE UNDER THE IMPACTFUL LEADERSHIP OF HIS EXCELLENCY RT. HON FRANCIS OGBONNA NWIFURU
Ebonyi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon Stephen Uchenna Igwe.
Ebonyi state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Chief Stephen Uchenna Igwe has disclosed that the present administration under Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru made remarkable achievements in the Local government system of the state within one year in office.
He made this known today while addressing newsmen in his office as he marks one year in office, adding that the reformation was imperative as it helps to incorporate the people at the grassroots into governance.
According to him, once the leadership of every state flows from top to bottom, each with its legitimate corrective measures, peace is bound to be enjoyed in all the nooks and crannies of the area.
“For instance, every traditional ruler knows his subjects fully, the same applicable to the executive members of town unions and other community leaders. On this note whenever the positions are legitimately put in place, the people at the hinterland are prone to enjoy peace” he said.
He added that it was the governor’s desire for peace and orderliness in all the nooks and crannies of the state that made him (the governor) declare war against vacant positions involving town union executives and the traditional stools from the outset of this administration.
Immediately the governor’s intention concerning the traditional institutions was made known, and we, his disciples of leadership have no other option than to strive towards the actualization of his desire.
Consequent upon that, the state government through my office had not only supervised the elections of more than 45 Traditional rulers but also monitored their coronations” he added.
The commissioner disclosed that some of the traditional rulers have been given staff of office while others are yet to be presented to the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State for the issuance of Staff of Office and stated that once that is done, they would be provided with their respective benefits.
The commissioner added that his office had restored peace in so many communities in Ebonyi State which includes: Ukwagba Ngbo Autonomous Community in Ohaukwu L.G.A after 20 years of internal crisis, Nkalagu Autonomous Community in Ishielu L.G.A, Umuezeoka Autonomous Community in Ezza North L.G.A, Abaomege Autonomous Community and others.
He further stated that the governor had not only prioritized the peace and security of the Ebonyi people in his administration but also demonstrated much concern for the welfare of the civil servants.
“His Excellency has increased Ebonyi workers’ salaries especially at the Local Government Level where I am in-charge with N20,000 each, the governor, in his magnanimity had paid N50,000 each to Ebonyi Local Government workers as Christ bonus and N100.000 each to State civil servants and additional N10,000 each to all Ebonyi civil servants as new year breakfast.
“He distributed over 15,000 bags of 25kg bags of rice to Local Government workers during the Christmas period and directed for the regular implementation of their promotion.
Through my ministry, the governor had distributed bags of rice and cash gifts to the Traditional Rulers during Christmas celebration and attended to the less privileged and elderly people in the rural areas” he said.
Chief Igwe further revealed that the members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government Affairs had visited his office for both familiarization tour and oversight function through which the members commended his relationship with Ebonyi traditional rulers, his staff, council chairmen Development Centre Co-coordinators and the principal officers across the 13 Council areas.
According to him, the committee equally added that his relationship is not only cordial but also productive.
“The team commended my team work with the SSA to the Governor on Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Paul Nwogha and the SA to the Governor on Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Raymond Chukwuma Ujebe.
