The Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has disclosed that the recent reshuffling of the federal cabinet by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was aimed at realizing his administration's economic policies.
He made the observation when he was a special guest at the African Independent Television, AIT Programme known as “FOCUS” on Monday, 29th October 2024.
Senator Nwebonyi, who is currently representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, also predicted that President Tinubu’s economic policies would begin to yield a bountiful harvest in the next few months.
He noted that the 10th Senate, under the leadership of the Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, remains strongly united to make laws that would help transform Nigeria as a nation.
The Senator in a press release by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Romanus Uzor described President Tinubu as a result-oriented leader and a consummate accountant who knows the best way to reshape Nigeria’s economy.
He cited Lagos as his magic wand in economic recovery and development in Nigeria, where Tinubu served as a governor before his election as Nigerian president.
“President Tinubu is a very result-oriented person. The reshuffling he did in his cabinet is aimed at putting the best forward so that he can achieve his economic policies all geared towards reshaping the economy of Nigeria," he said.
The legislator, who is also the Vice Chairman of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Committee on Education, Sciences, and Culture, further stated that President Tinubu inherited a very stinking and shaky economy.
He, however, admitted that President Tinubu has been working round the clock to reshape the economy. He called for patience and unflinching support from the citizens to the President and insisted that the present economic hardships would soon melt away.
Senator Nwebonyi equally maintained that the 10th Senate has been working assiduously to place the country on the part of greatness through effective oversight and robust legislation.
According to him, the 10th Senate, under the leadership of the Senate President-His Excellency Senator Godswill Akpabio, is united, focused, independent, and people-oriented.
He stated that the presidential nominees usually go through thorough scrutiny before they are cleared by the Senate, noting that the 10th Senate is not a rubber stamp.
Responding to a question on the performance indices of some of the Ministers, especially the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, while citing his recent negative appraisal from a member of the House of Representatives, Senator Nwebonyi passed a vote of confidence on Senator Umahi.
He described the Works Minister as an infrastructural guru who has distinguished himself as former Governor of Ebonyi state.
In his words, under Umahi's watch as former governor, the Ebonyi State has the best infrastructure in the Southeast courtesy. He also cited some of his achievements in revolutionizing the road infrastructure in Nigeria as the current Minister of Works. He emphasized that President Tinubu has carried out a performance assessment of his cabinet and knows exactly what he wants.
Senator Nwebonyi, who has been a vocal commentator on national issues, explained that there’s no impeachment threat of Senate President Akpabio in the Senat,e, adding that the whole 109 Senators have unanimously passed a vote of confidence on him.
He described the Senate President as a unifier, an uncommon leader, and a humble servant-leader who harbors no malice against anyone.
