The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Ebonyi State Council, has expressed worry over the rising cost of living in the state, especially the house rent.
The Union, in a communique signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor and the Secretary, Comrade Nnamdi Akpa, condemned the operation style of the landlords and agents in handling house rent in the state.
According to the Communique drafted by Ogbonna Caleb, Ogodo Jacob and Igidi Blessing, the Congress expressed worry over the rising cost of living in Ebonyi State, including the high cost of food items, despite being the food basket of the Southeast region, transportation and housing, among others.
The Union further urged the government to rise against the ugly situation by instituting a price control mechanism to check the operations of traders, motorists, tricyclists, okada riders, landlords and house agents among others, who are deliberately adding to the sufferings of the citizens.
"Congress commended the Council members for their high level of professionalism in the discharge of their duties and urged them to continue to uphold the tenets of journalism, as the Council is committed to their wellbeing and protection of their constitutional rights as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, but warned them against indulging in sensational or junk journalism.
"Congress enjoined members to always pay their practising and professional fees as and when due, to enjoy their rights and privileges as bonafide members of the union.
"Congress also received reports of the recent elections of Sports Writers Association (SWAN), Ebonyi State Chapter and the Correspondents' Chapel and congratulated Comrade Andy Nwogha, who emerged as SWAN Chairman and members of his Executives as well as Comrade Uchenna Inya, who emerged as Correspondents' Chapel Chairman and members of his executive.
"Congress assured the new leadership of SWAN and Correspondents' Chapel in the State of the total support of the Council and urged them to extend hands of fellowship to those who contested against them and unite all members for the peace and progress of the two unions.
"Congress deliberated on the deplorable condition of the Council's Secretariat, and charged the leadership of the Council to take drastic measures towards reorganizing, rehabilitating and renovating the Secretariat to not only serve the purpose of a conducive environment for members but to also be a source of revenue to the Union," the communique further read.
