Formed just seven months ago, Abakaliki FC has already sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football scene by eliminating three Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) giants in the ongoing Presidential Federation Cup — including powerhouse Enyimba FC and former NPFL contenders Nasarawa United. With a semifinal date against Ikorodu FC on the horizon, the Ebonyi-based club is showing no signs of slowing down.
The club’s resurgence has not only rekindled football fever in Abakaliki but also attracted throngs of fans to the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium. Their Cinderella run in the Federation Cup has bolstered the image of the state and opened doors for potential investors in the sporting and tourism sectors.
However, the team remains grounded. In the wake of last weekend’s disappointing home loss, sources from the camp reveal that players have voluntarily agreed to part with half of their monthly salaries to boost preparation efforts for the remaining five league matches. Speaking anonymously, several players expressed regret over recent league struggles but assured fans that the best is yet to come.
“This is not the end — we’re more determined than ever,” said one of the players. “We’re appealing for prayers and support as we chase glory in the Federation Cup and aim to finish strong in the league.”
Head Coach Ifeanyi Onyedika echoed the team's determination, emphasizing that while the Presidential Cup run is historic, the NNL remains their primary focus.
“Our contract is league-based,” he stated, “but we’re praying for divine favor to lift the Federation Cup and wrap up the league in a respectable position.”
