The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi State, Mr. Richard Ugo-Idike, has boldly declared that Abakaliki FC is poised to clinch the 2025 President Federation Cup, following their dramatic semifinal victory over Ikorodu City FC.
In a tense encounter at the Bwari Township Stadium, Abuja, Abakaliki FC held their nerves to win 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time. The victory sent shockwaves across the Nigerian football community and sealed the team’s spot in the final of the prestigious tournament.
Speaking shortly after the match, Ugo-Idike described the win as a “historic breakthrough” for the club and the state at large.
“This is a proud moment for Ebonyi. Our boys have shown determination, courage, and class. We’re bringing the trophy home – that’s our mission,” he stated confidently during a post-match phone interview.
The newly-formed Abakaliki FC, less than seven months old, has stunned football fans nationwide with a giant-killing run that has seen them eliminate top-tier clubs, including Katsina United, Nasarawa United, and three-time CAF champions Enyimba International.
Commissioner Ugo-Idike emphasized that the team's success is no fluke, crediting the coaching staff and players for their discipline and drive.
“This team has defied all odds. They’ve earned their place in the final, and we’re confident they’ll finish the job. Ebonyi State stands firmly behind them,” he added.
As the Federation Cup final approaches, anticipation is building across Ebonyi and among Nigerian football faithful, with many now rallying behind Abakaliki FC in their quest for glory.
