The 22nd National Sports Festival, branded Gateway Games OGUN 2024, launched in electrifying fashion at the iconic M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, as Nigeria rallied under one banner to celebrate unity, youth power, and sporting excellence.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima officially opened the multi-sport fiesta, commending the Ogun State Government for what he called a “masterclass in hospitality and execution.” Shettima emphasized that sports transcend mere competition—it is a national force for peace, cohesion, and economic revival.
“Every sprint taken and every cheer heard is a call to unity,” Shettima said. “Let this torch we light today remind us that the promise of greatness lives in every Nigerian youth.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun, the host, delivered a message brimming with pride and vision. Describing the festival as a convergence of culture, competition, and identity, he reaffirmed the state’s commitment to positioning sports as a driver of tourism, investment, and social development.
“Ogun State is proud to serve as the Gateway to greatness,” Abiodun stated. “This festival is not just about medals—it’s about memories, milestones, and nation-building.”
He urged visitors to experience the state beyond the tracks and fields, spotlighting historic landmarks like Olumo Rock as symbols of Ogun’s cultural depth and heritage.
In strong support, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, hailed the festival as a model of national integration and youth empowerment.
“Sport remains one of the most potent tools for unity,” Dikko said. “We are proud to partner in this journey of discovery and development.”
Echoing this sentiment, Director-General Bukola Olopade declared Gateway Games OGUN 2024 a landmark event in Nigeria’s sports evolution.
“This is more than a festival—it’s a statement. We are showing the world that Nigerian sport is alive, ambitious, and ready for the global stage,” Olopade affirmed.
The opening ceremony was a dazzling showcase of Nigeria’s diversity and creativity—complete with cultural displays, music, and a fireworks spectacle that lit up the Abeokuta night sky. The stadium pulsed with energy as athletes from all 36 states and the FCT marched with pride, representing not just their regions but the hopes of a nation.
As the competitions unfold across disciplines—from track and field to combat sports, aquatics to team games—the stakes are high and the spotlight intense. Medals await the fastest, strongest, and most determined. But beyond the podium, the legacy of Gateway Games OGUN 2024 lies in its power to inspire, connect, and elevate.
This is Nigeria in motion. This is unity in action. This is the future taking flight.
