Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has firmly denied media reports suggesting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to relieve him of his position, labelling the speculation as false, unfounded, and the work of “mischief makers.”
The denial was contained in an official statement released on Sunday by the SGF’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Segun Imohiosen, who described the report as “a fabrication lacking any iota of truth.”
“There is no basis for the rumour circulating in certain quarters. President Tinubu has not made, nor is he considering, any move to remove the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” the statement declared.
Akume, through his media office, cautioned members of the public and media platforms against giving oxygen to falsehoods, warning that such unverified reports could damage the credibility of governance and weaken public trust in leadership institutions.
“The President reposes unwavering confidence in Senator Akume’s leadership and commitment to executing the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement added.
Mr. Imohiosen also cited a recent statement issued by Presidential Adviser on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, affirming that the administration has full faith in Akume’s role and performance.
“Spreading false or misleading claims is not only irresponsible but potentially destabilising,” the SGF’s office emphasized. “We urge all Nigerians to rely on credible sources for accurate information about the administration.”
Senator Akume remains one of the top-ranking cabinet officials in the Tinubu government, serving as a central figure in inter-ministerial coordination and federal executive functions since his appointment in 2023.
The statement concluded unequivocally:
“Senator Dr. George Akume, CON, continues to serve as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Any reports suggesting otherwise should be ignored in totality.”
