The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind Abakaliki FC, urging the team to defeat Kwara United and clinch the 2025 President Federation Cup title this Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Onah, in a statement issued ahead of the historic clash, hailed the club—fondly called the Rice Boys—for their remarkable run to the final of Nigeria's oldest football competition, attributing their success to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s strategic investment in youth development and sports.
“Football is a unifying force that transcends barriers. Abakaliki FC has not only brought pride to our dear state but has also put Ebonyi on the national sporting map,” Onah declared.
He noted that the club's meteoric rise—despite it being their debut season in the Nigeria National League—reflects the visionary leadership of Governor Nwifuru, who revived the team following years of inactivity after the disbandment of the former Ebonyi Angels by a past administration.
The Deputy Speaker called on the players to remain focused and display a high level of skill and teamwork in their bid to lift the prestigious Federation Cup, which would be a first for the state since its creation.
“We believe in the team. We urge the boys to give it their all and bring the trophy home. It will be a befitting reward for the Governor’s unwavering support for sports and youth empowerment,” Onah added.
He further encouraged youths in the state to seize opportunities in sports and aspire to professional excellence, assuring that the Assembly remains committed to policies that support grassroots talent development.
As the final whistle beckons, Onah called on all Ebonyians and football enthusiasts to offer their prayers and moral support to Abakaliki FC, as the club stands on the brink of making history.
