The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Elechi Inyima, has ordered the immediate removal of illegal motor parks and roadside trading activities within Abakaliki, the state capital.
In an official statement issued by the Ministry, the Commissioner expressed concern over the indiscriminate use of unauthorized locations as motor parks and loading bays by commercial drivers.
The areas identified included Old Ogoja Road by Ebonyi Hotels Roundabout, the Fidelity Bank axis, Ezza Road by Amusement Park, Spera-In-Deo Roundabout along the Abakaliki–Afikpo Road, and Presco Roundabout on the Abakaliki–Enugu Highway, among others.
Inyima described the development as unacceptable, as he noted that these illegal parks cause traffic congestion, endanger the lives of road users and pedestrians, and mar the city's aesthetic appeal.
The Commissioner directed the commercial transport operators to vacate these illegal locations and relocate to the designated central motor park opposite the International Market, Abakaliki, on or before June 30, 2025.
In a related move, the commissioner also raised alarm over the conversion of newly built bus stop shelters into makeshift shops by traders and food vendors.
According to the Commissioner, the shelters meant for passengers are now littered with waste, food remnants, and debris, posing environmental and public health risks.
He mandated that all traders and vendors operating within these bus shelters vacate the premises immediately.
To ensure enforcement,
He revealed that a task force has been constituted to implement the directive.
"To ensure enforcement, beginning July 1, 2025, the task force will apprehend violators and impound vehicles found operating in unauthorized areas.
“This serves as a final warning. The Ministry will not hesitate to take firm action against any defaulters,” Inyima stated.
